about us

Loyá Ragi is a heritage artisan brand. We bring Indonesian bamboo-weaving traditions into the pieces you carry with you every day. With that, I want to help sustain generations of craftsmanship and an entire village.

It all started in November 2025….

our story

…I was taking a break from my routine at
home and was in the middle of a solo backpacking trip through Indonesia. In what felt like the most remote place on earth, deep in the Lombok jungle, I met Andy, a local craftsman running his family’s bamboo business.

He welcomed me into his home, shared the story of their tradition and introduced me to the art of bamboo-weaving.

Moved by his kindness and the depth of craftsmanship, I bought a bamboo bag and a few other handmade pieces from their small shop before continuing my journey.

A few days later, I was still thinking about Andy, his openhearted kindness and the poverty in his village. It was the rainy season, and many of his friends told me their homes had collapsed multiple times under heavy rainfall. These rains are becoming more frequent as weather patterns shift. In the 2025/2026 season alone, Lombok recorded at least three major floods.

But with lacking resources to rebuild their homes, many of them are forced to abandon their homes and move to live in the stables with their livestock.

Moved by deep sympathy and a desire to
make a change — however small — I kept thinking about the beauty of Andy’s
craft, his family’s story, and their products. I felt certain that people back home in Europe would value them too. The rest is history 🤎

products and patterns

Each bag is one of a kind, carefully handcrafted by Andy and his family. Every pattern tells a story of family bonds, cultural heritage, and tradition passed down through generations. Certain steps in the process of making the bags are reserved for women as they are traditionally valued for their precision and refined technique. Andy and his family have developed 26 distinct patterns and combinations. Some of these patterns are known only to a few artisans and the knowledge of how to create them kept secret.

the name

Loyá Ragi stands for tradition-infused products. Loyá is a creative adaptation of the name of Andy’s village. I initially believed Ragi to be the Sasak word for “pattern” (Sasak being the traditional language of Lombok). But when I shared my idea of naming the brand Loyá Ragi – Patterns of Lombok, Andy simply laughed and told me that ragi actually means “spice.”

And that is how Loyá Ragi became infused
with tradition.

my why (and yours, too?)

Simply transforming Andy's craft into a profit-driven business for myself never felt right. This has always been about Andy, his family, village and culture. Loyá Ragi helps to preserve and spread his beautiful tradition, and it reminds us that conscious purchasing, especially in our Western consumer culture, can create real change.

A fair share of every sale goes back to Andy. And by choosing bamboo products over fast fashion, you support a naturally renewable, sustainable material. Your order does more than support a village rebuilding after heavy rains. It is also an active decision against an industry that significantly contributes to climate change.

Loyá Ragi is about family bonds and deeply rooted tradition. And now you’re part of the family too.
